New Dutch passport and ID card a mix of tradition and innovation

The new Dutch passports and identity cards will be available from 30 September 2024. They combine the familiar design of previous models with advanced technologies that meet the latest international security standards and legislation. These improvements ensure greater security, accessibility and ease of use.

Similarities with the old passport

  • Appearance and layout: The new passport retains the same structure, colour and layout as the old model, including the pages for visas and stamps.
  • Functionality: It remains a globally recognized identity and travel document, with the same reliability and practical applicability.

New features of the passport (2024)

1. Security

  • Advanced technology: LASINK™ Helios technology makes the passport difficult to counterfeit, a significant improvement over previous models.
  • Chip access: The new Card Access Number (CAN) simplifies access to the RFID chip, making this process more efficient and secure.
  • Tactile elements: Tactile ridges on the edges of the holder page make the document more accessible for people with visual impairments.

2. Design

Color photos:

  • A small color image (LASINK™ Helios) replaces the older SLI (Stereo Laser Image) technology.
  • A larger passport photo is stored in the chip
  • A color photo has been added on page 3
  • Authenticity: These new photos improve recognition and security.

3. Additional information

  • Personal information, such as the holder’s height and any partner information, has been added to the title page. This was not present in the previous model.
